Celebrating our 14th year in 2006, the Festival grew out of an initiative of the UpTown Waterloo Business Improvement Area, which initially saw a few musicians playing on the street in front of a number of stores on King Street.
In 1998, we changed the focus of the Festival to a pure Jazz format, rented a tent in a central location, added proper staging and sound equipment, a second day stage location and began to involve corporate sponsors in a bigger way. From 1998 on, the Festival was managed with one thing in mind: to provide top-notch live jazz in the picturesque setting of UpTown Waterloo free of charge for everyone to enjoy.
In 1998, we added a Thursday night Gala and developed our mandate. To this day, the gala serves as a fundraiser for our Festival. In 2000, we incorporated as a not-for-profit and became a registered charity. We were successful in obtaining Trillium funding, corporate sponsors continued their high level of support and the Festival continued to grow exponentially.
2003 was the year we moved to a larger venue; our growth necessitated the move from the crowded tent to a portable raised covered, stage line which greatly increased site lines and sound quality. We also added Sunday performances. |

We believe the Festival makes a significant contribution to our community. It is a widely anticipated summer jazz music event. The performances are free (with the exception of the Gala), accessible and open to individuals from all walks of life. The Festival creates goodwill in the community at large, draws tourists to the Region, promotes UpTown Waterloo, and provides economic opportunities for local businesses and exposure for Waterloo. It also provides a safe, family-oriented environment, and promotes healthy living by encouraging people to go outdoors. It provides opportunities for increased volunteer involvement and strengthens community partnerships. |
about ..our artistic vision
The Festival is committed to providing an exceptional level of jazz featuring world-class musicians. This standard of excellence is reflected not only in the quality of performers presented each year but also in the professionalism of the production of the event.
Highlight performers over the past six years have included multiple Juno winners Metalwood, Freddy Cole, Emilie Claire Barlow, Carol Welsman, legendary guitarist Ed Bickert, Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass, the 20 piece big band Freeflight, acclaimed Montreal-based vocalist Ranee Lee, Juno award winner Lenny Solomon, pianist David Braid, vocalist Heather Bambrick, New York saxophonist John Tank and many others.
Since its inception, the Festival has been committed to nurturing Canadian artists, particularly those from our local and Toronto communities. The UWJF showcases musicians in a well-respected, well-attended venue. The dates of the Festival have been set to avoid conflict with other major Jazz festivals in Ontario or Quebec which ensures a great audience turnout and allows us to attract a high caliber of musicianship by avoiding scheduling conflicts. |

Performers are selected based on their musicianship, uniqueness, and public appeal. The result is an eclectic mix of jazz that offers something for everyone. The level of artistic enthusiasm and ongoing musician satisfaction is reflected in the large backlog of bios from artists who have expressed interest in becoming involved in the Festival. |
about... the festival organization
| The Festival is 100% volunteer organized. Executive Board volunteers bring solid skills from a variety of professional backgrounds. Prominent local business entrepreneurs as well individuals with media, sales and marketing, production, jazz music, human resource management and public sector experience all lend their expertise. Our volunteers base of approximately 85 share the excitement of the Festival, with hands-on participation during the event. The 2005 Festival alone represented 2,300 volunteer hours |
The Festival is funded solely through corporate donations/sponsorships, in-kind contributions, public grants and our Gala. We have seen a dramatic increase in corporate support over the years. Similarly, public funding has also had a dramatic impact on the Festival - 2002 represented the second year of a four-year Trillium grant. All monies raised go directly to the Festival and the largest single expenditure each year is the cost of the performers. |
UpTown Waterloo Jazz Festival Inc. received charitable status in 1999. In 2000, we established the UpTown Waterloo Jazz Endowment Fund to help fund future Festivals. This fund is managed by the Kitchener-Waterloo Community Foundation and the principal is permanently protected. More recently, we have adopted the Ethical Fundraising & Financial Accountability Code as developed by the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy.
The UWJF has proven itself to be financially prudent and is committed to continue this fiscal responsibility. |
